The complement system

چکیده
The system of plasma proteins called complement was so-named because it complements the activity of antibody in the lysis of bacteria. It has a central role in host defence against many micro-organisms and in the modulation of inflammatory reactions, an activity that has been illuminated by the study of humans with naturally occurring deficiencies of complement. Complement is activated by three pathways: the classical, alternative and mannan-binding lectin (MBL) pathways (Figure 1 and Table 1). The classical pathway is primarily activated by antibody bound to antigens (immune complexes). The alternative pathway is activated by the direct binding of complement component C3 to pathogens in the absence of antibody. The recently discovered MBL pathway is initiated by the binding of MBL to mannose groups, present on many bacterial cell walls. All three pathways lead to the cleavage of C3, the central component of complement, which functions as an opsonin, tagging pathogens and immune complexes for recognition and uptake, mediated by specific complement receptors on phagocytic cells. Subsequent activation of the terminal complement pathway, known as the membrane attack complex (MAC), leads to cell lysis. An important current focus of complement research is the physiological activities of complement in vivo, on which we will concentrate in this primer.

A part of the immune system that improves (complements) the ability of antibodies and phagocytic cells to clear microorganisms and injured cells from an organism, attacks the pathogen's cell membrane, and encourages inflammation called complement system. It is main part of immune system. Over thirty proteins and protein pieces compose the complement system, including cell membrane receptors, an...

Members of gram-negative bacteria family Pasteurellaceae, include a large number of important economically human and veterinary pathogens. Organisms belonging to the family can colonize in mucosal surfaces of the respiratory, alimentary, genital tracts and cause diseases in various mammals, birds, and reptiles. Hemorrhagic septicemia is an acute disease of cattle and buffaloes in tropi...

, Shaheed Beheshti University of Medical Sciences Abstract: Background: The main surgical side effects and complications in many cases are due to the long duration of the anesthesia. Obviously these phenomena are related to the use of anesthetic drugs which have effects on liver blood flow, immune system and homeostasis. One important effect is activation of complement system. In this stud...
متن کاملSOLVING FUZZY LINEAR SYSTEMS BY USING THE SCHUR COMPLEMENT WHEN COEFFICIENT MATRIX IS AN M-MATRIX
This paper analyzes a linear system of equations when the righthandside is a fuzzy vector and the coefficient matrix is a crisp M-matrix. Thefuzzy linear system (FLS) is converted to the equivalent crisp system withcoefficient matrix of dimension 2n × 2n. However, solving this crisp system isdifficult for large n because of dimensionality problems . It is shown that thisdifficulty may be avoide...

Abstract Introduction: Thalassemia is the most common hereditary anemia in Iran. The aim of this study was to evaluate the humoral immune system and assess the effect of splenectomy on the serum level of immunoglobulins IgG, IgM, and IgA and complement components in patients with major thalassemia. Materials and Methods: This interventional semi-experimental study (before-after) was performed...
متن کاملImprovement of anticomplementary activity assay for the quality control of immunoglobulin product: an Iranian pilot scale study
Abstract Background and Objectives One of the side effects of immunoglobulin administration is the activation of the complement system related to the high concentration of aggregates/large polymers in the production process. Measuring anticomplementary activity (ACA) is important in pharmaceutical quality control and is a criterion of spontaneous activation of complement system in immunoglobuli...
